Why Should I Bring My Baby to the Dentist’s Office?

Bringing infants in for routine dental checkups and cleanings with a pediatric dentist in Lake St. Louis will help establish a strong relationship between them and the team, helping them feel comfortable every time they visit down the road. This can take some stress off of you, their parent or guardian, as well as provide you with a space to ask important questions you may have about your baby’s dental health.

When Should My Baby First Go to the Dentist’s Office?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as Dr. Ivan and our team, recommends bringing your baby to our office either as soon as their first tooth grows in or by their first birthday—whichever happens first! Dr. Ivan will teach you how to thoroughly clean your baby’s gums, help soothe discomfort from teething, and answer any other questions you may have about your little one’s oral development and health.

What Happens During Baby’s First Dental Checkup

Typically, the first dental checkups for babies are called “lap exams.” These are exactly what they sound like—you will have your baby sit comfortably in your lap as Dr. Ivan conducts a short oral examination, which will involve looking at their gums, tongue, and any teeth that may already be present. Dr. Ivan will also take time to learn a little more about their oral habits as well as answer any questions you may have. He will also conduct a lip and tongue-tie screening to determine whether your child needs to receive a frenectomy, which could improve nursing, sleeping, and other actions that are related to their oral movement and function.
