Toddler Teeth Development

Children’s teeth begin erupting through the gumline between the ages of six and 12 months. However, it’s important to keep in mind that every child follows their own timeline, so don’t worry if your child's tooth eruption does not fall within this time frame. Typically, the first teeth to grow in are the lower incisors, which are the front visible teeth, followed by the upper incisors. By the time your toddler is about three years old, they’ll likely have 20 of their primary teeth!

What Is Teething?

Teething begins when your child’s teeth begin growing into their mouth, usually between six and 12 months old. It will continue through toddlerhood until all of their baby teeth have erupted through the gumline. As this happens, your baby’s gums will become tender and swollen. Fortunately, Dr. Ivan and our team can provide you with some helpful tips and tricks to soothe their pain as well as your stress!

How to Clean Your Toddler’s Teeth and Gums

Just like with adults, it’s important to clean your toddler’s teeth and gums twice a day, once in the morning and once before they go to bed. Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush designed for children and a rice-sized amount of children’s toothpaste. Be sure to brush each of their teeth to remove any plaque.

Maintaining good at-home oral hygiene is just a piece of the puzzle—the other piece is bringing your little one in for a routine dental checkup and cleaning every six months with Dr. Ivan. This professional care can help treat and prevent common dental concerns like decay.
